The Division of Life Sciences

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program

Summer 2026 Application will open in February 2026!

The Division of Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, established in 2006, offers experienced undergraduate research fellows the opportunity to engage in faculty-mentored research over 10 weeks each summer. This program allows participants to enhance their understanding of the research process, make significant progress on their research projects (often in preparation for their senior thesis), and strengthen their connections within the supportive scholarly community of the Division of Life Sciences (DLS).

Fellows develop their ability to effectively communicate their science by creating a video research reel aimed at a general audience and by presenting their  research to the scientific community during our culminating poster session. Additionally, social activities are planned to allow fellows to connect and enjoy a highly productive summer of science together!

The DLS SURF program consists of two categories of undergraduate research fellowships intended for RU-NB Life Sciences majors pursuing novel, independent research. Awardees are expected to work in the lab full-time (35 hours/week) for 10 weeks and present at our summer poster session scheduled in early August. Accepted applicants will be awarded a $4000 fellowship.

There is one single application to apply for the two fellowships in the program.  You may considered for more than one fellowship, if eligible.  All applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. to receive the fellowship. This program is designed specifically for students with previous research experience. The application requires a research proposal written by the applicant and a statement of support prepared by the faculty research mentor. Please use the links below for additional application guidelines and requirements.  Please email the fellowship program coordinator, This email address is being protected from spambots.
