Major: Biological Sciences

How did you decide on your major?

As a Pre-PA student, I was told that I could choose any major I wanted as long as I completed all my prerequisites. As someone very interested in medicine and the world of science as a whole, I wanted to land on something in that range. Being a Biological Sciences major checked all the boxes. I’m completing all my prerequisites for PA school, while also taking classes that align with my own interests. I get to take classes that I don’t necessarily need for PA school like physics and evolutionary biology, but that I am learning so much from and that I genuinely enjoy taking to complete my major.

What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?

What appeals to me about my chosen career field of a PA is the ability to work with and learn about modern medicine as well as actually treating patients with it and improving their lives. Healthcare is extremely important to everyone and I feel that having a great provider is essential. I want to become one of these providers that can make as many people as possible have a safe and comfortable experience receiving care. As a Biological Sciences major, I am getting all the background and foundational knowledge I need to go into this field and be as knowledgeable of a provider as possible.

Do you have favorite class/professor within your major?

Functional Human Anatomy with Dr. Rossman-Murphy!

What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?

Outside of the Biological Sciences major, I have enjoyed taking classes for my SAS core. Specifically, I’ve really enjoyed the history classes I have taken that covered periods of history I never got to learn about in high school. No matter what career field you choose, it is important to be well rounded and be educated in a range of subjects. Taking classes in the core ensures this!

What are your other Rutgers activities?

I am currently the Vice President of the Rutgers Pre-PA club. This club has connected me to dozens of students in the same position as me and allowed me to learn about my chosen career field, meet peers for support, partake in experiences that help strengthen my PA school application, as well as gain leadership experience. If Rutgers has a pre-professional club for your chosen career field, I highly recommend joining! Outside of Rutgers, I work as a Physical Therapy Technician to build clinical experience and spent my winter break shadowing some PAs!

What are your plans following graduation?

My plans following graduation are to attend PA school and become a PA-C!

Anything else you would like to share?

The Biological Sciences major can be difficult, but is so rewarding! Believe in your abilities and don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone’s journey is different.
