How did you decide on your major?
decided to be a biology major because it would provide me the necessary tools to reach my career goals. Additionally, I knew that I would enjoy my time in college as a biology major; I love my classes and have no doubt I made the right choice.
What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?
I am blown away by the complexity of life, and as a biology major, I can begin to understand the intricate interactions that bring living beings into existence. Moreover, I am drawn to the healthcare field for its integration of biological sciences with human-centered aspects, providing me with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives.
Do you have favorite class/professor within your major?
I believe that taking Biology 115 and 116 with Professor Stern-Cardinale was the perfect introduction to the major. I enjoyed these classes so much; taking them gave me the confirmation that this was the right place for me.
What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?
I recently started a new position as a Teaching Intern for Organic Chemistry II. I had other experiences in teaching before, but this gave me the opportunity to share my passion for science with my peers in a different way. I co-lead weekly review sessions, and it is my favorite part of my week this semester.
What are your other Rutgers activities?
I try to take advantage of the many opportunities here at Rutgers, so I am very involved with extracurricular activities. In addition to being a Teaching Intern and a Learning Assistant for precalculus, I serve as the secretary of the Companion Animal Club, treasurer of the Amnesty International chapter, and a research assistant at the Arts in Health Research Lab. On top of that, I am a part of Douglass Residential College, currently engaged in the Faculty Fellows Program with the artist Amina Ross to have my artistic work shown in a student exhibition. Outside of Rutgers, I volunteer with The Take Back the Night Foundation, where I produce and co-host their podcast Dear Katie: Survivor Stories, aimed at supporting survivors of sexual and domestic violence.
What are your plans following graduation?
After graduation, I plan to attend medical school. My goal is to combine my activist and scientific drive and advocate for better healthcare for women, focusing on gender medicine and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the healthcare system.
Anything else you would like to share?
I am an international student, and although it took some time for me to adapt, now I feel at home at Rutgers.
