Major: Biological Sciences
Minors: Nutrition, Italian
How did you decide on your major?
In high school I took AP Biology and really enjoyed the course. Science was the only subject in school that I felt like I could really excel in. I was also interested in medical school and research, so a biology major was perfect for meeting the requirements for both paths.
What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?
I have always been passionate about working with others and helping people. Right now, I am exploring different career options. I love the Biological Sciences major because it allows me to explore these different pathways and not limit myself to one type of career. There are so many opportunities in STEM, and I am enjoying learning about all of them.
Do you have favorite class/professor within your major?
My favorite professor is Dr. Watford who teaches Advanced Nutrition (a science elective for biology). I have been working in his lab since the summer of 2023. He is very passionate about learning and inspires me to keep exploring.
What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?
Outside of biology, I am very passionate about writing. I have been working as a writing center tutor since spring 2023. In addition, I presented my research paper “Age of the Instagram Body: Exploring how Body-related Content on Instagram Impacts Women’s Perceptions of their Bodies” at the Rutgers Undergraduate Research Writing Conference 2023. My work is now published in Rutgers Libraries. This was an amazing experience and taught me a lot about professionalism and academia.
What are your other Rutgers activities?
I am in the School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program (SASHP) and serve on the Peer Mentor program programming board. As a member of the board, I help plan events for the peer mentor program that really brings the entire SASHP community together. Through this experience I have learned a lot about collaboration, planning, and networking. I am also involved in two clubs on campus, Rutgers Project Sunshine and Rutgers CHAARG. I have met a lot of amazing people through these organizations and participated in many rewarding activities.
What are your plans following graduation?
I am still considering different post-graduation paths. Right now, I am considering medical school and research.
