Major: Biological Sciences

How did you decide on your major?

After taking AP Biology and Physiology in high school, I fell in love with where the two courses intersected. Knowing I wanted to attend medical school, I found that the courses within a Biological Sciences major best aligned with my interests. I love that there is so much variety within the electives list, including biotechnology, evolution, ecology, and more. I knew I wanted my list of courses each semester to have variety, and this major absolutely allowed that.

What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?

Wanting to be a physician from a young age, I knew that following the pre-medical track was the path for me. I specifically chose this department for its flexibility and because it provided a strong foundation for medical school. There are also hundreds of research opportunities, including research for credit.

Do you have favorite class/professor within your major?

I loved Foundations of Evolution because it really changed how I approach learning. It encouraged me to think about the “why” behind the body’s intricacies at a molecular level. Even after my first year of medical school, that mindset has stayed with me. When studying pathology and how the body compensates, I naturally look for the reasoning behind it, which helps me understand things more deeply rather than just memorizing them.

What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?

My favorite academic experience outside of my major was tutoring elementary school students with Reading Partners NY. I really enjoyed working with young students and watching their confidence grow over time. It is also very meaningful to help students who face socioeconomic challenges that can affect their reading development and academic success.

What are your other Rutgers activities?

I worked as a Supplemental Instructor for the Office of Development and Academic Success in the Sciences (ODASIS) in Organic Chemistry II. I also volunteered in the NICU through the Health Professions Office (HPO), served as the Bristol-Myers Squibb Hospital Chair for Project Sunshine, and was an Honors Ambassador for the Rutgers Honors Program. Additionally, I conducted research in the Driscoll Lab studying neurodegenerative diseases in C. Elegans. I presented my published research on mental health outcomes of high-achieving students at the 2024 Undergraduate Research Writing Conference, as well as my wet lab research at the 2024 and 2025 Aresty Research Symposium.

What are your plans following graduation?

I am currently a first-year medical student as part of the BA/MD Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Joint program and look forward to continuing my journey towards becoming a physician!
