Major: Biological Sciences
How did you decide on your major?
I was first interested in the Biological Sciences major after taking General Biology, which gave me a snap-shot of the interesting fields I would be exposed to as a Biological Sciences major. These fields were ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, evolutionary theory, taxonomy, cell biology, and many more. This well-rounded quality and all-inclusive academic caliber of the Biological Sciences Department, as well as the fantastic advisors, solidified my decision in becoming a Biological Science Major.
What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?
The department is very easy to contact, and the advisors are always flexible and willing to meet with me throughout my four years at Rutgers. Most importantly, the advisors not only helped me in succeeding in my coursework, but they genuinely were very resourceful, passionate, and understanding. For example, instead of only providing general information on the major, the advisors gave me unique and exceptional advice in both academics and professional development.
Do you have favorite class/professor within your major?
I have multiple favorite courses and professors. To name a few, Biochemistry (01:694:407) with Dr. Frank Deis, Genetics (01:447:380) with Dr. Ron Michaelis, and Human Parasitology (01:146:328) with Dr. Anne Keating. These instructors are fantastic lecturers and the courses themselves are extremely interesting.
What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?
Outside of my major, I had the opportunity to conduct research in the Department of Pharmacology at the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine. Not only did this experience foster within me a sense of academic independence (by enabling me to lead a fully independent project), but it gave me the opportunity to gain a greater appreciation for scientific research. As an undergraduate researcher I had the ability to attend seminars, participate in scientific discussions, and create/conduct poster presentations.
What are your other Rutgers activities?
I have been a peer instructor for courses such as General Chemistry, General Biology, Organic Chemistry, and Genetics. As a peer instructor, I worked with students of various backgrounds to aid in their success in science courses. I have also had the opportunity of being a member of the Honors Program, an Honors Peer Mentor, as well as a member of the Preparation in STEM leadership program. Rutgers has so many opportunities. I would strongly recommend anyone to reach out and get involved, whether its teaching, research, performing arts, debating, or any other activity.
What are your plans following graduation?
After graduation I am planning on pursuing the field of Medical Education. I am interested in becoming an associate professor, and possible clinician, at a medical college or university.
