Major: Biological Sciences & Philosophy
Why did you choose Biological Sciences as your major?
I decided to dual major in biology and philosophy because I was interested in the intersection of the two disciplines, specifically bioethics. The biological sciences major helped me build my fundamental knowledge of living systems, which allowed me to engage in bioethics in a more informed way.
What did you like most about it?
I enjoyed the freedom and variety that the biological sciences major offers. I was able to take a diverse range of courses, from Molecular Biology to Animal Reproduction. Also, when I wanted to delve deeper into a subject, I was able to by taking upper level classes in that area.
What is your current position, what do you, and what do you enjoy most about it?
I am currently completing my Fulbright English teaching fellowship in Taiwan. I teach English at an elementary school in Taichung, Taiwan. Besides interacting with my students and learning Chinese, I love traveling around the country and immersing myself with the Taiwanese culture.
What was your first job after Rutgers and how did you get it?
My first job after graduation is the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Taiwan. I applied to the Fulbright Program through the Rutgers Office of Distinguished Fellowships.
How did you move from that first job to your current position?
I am still working at my first job post-graduation. However, I will be attending Rutgers New Jersey Medical School August 2018.
Looking back, what classes or experiences at Rutgers would you point to as contributing to your successes?
For me, college was defined by the people I met and the experiences that sprouted from trying to constantly explore beyond my comfort zone. I would not be where I am now without standing on the shoulders of giants.
What advice do you have for our current Arts and Sciences students?
Remember your ABCs. Be ambitious, be benevolent, be curious. Do what you like, and do it well. And lastly, aim to build meaningful relationships.
