Koury Walker First-Generation Summer Research Scholarship

The Koury Walker First-Generation Summer Research Scholarship includes  $4000 fellowship for a 10 week summer research experience. The award is funded by a generous gift from Mr. Mark Koury and Ms. Daphne Walker and  supported by the Division of Life Sciences.

The award is open to rising seniors at the School of Arts and Sciences who are First-Generation undergraduate students. Students who meet these qualifications and are declared Life Science majors (Biological Science (119), Cell Biology and Neuroscience (146), Genetics (447), and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (694)) should be interested in pursuing undergraduate research under the supervision of a Division of Life Science faculty member from one of the departments listed above. Members of the Honors College should apply for one of the alternative DLS Fellowships (DLS-SURF, HCW-SURF, or HLS-SURF) and are not eligible for this fellowship.

Applicants need to have secured placement in a laboratory with a Research Mentor, who is a faculty member from the CBN (https://cbn.rutgers.edu/people/faculty), Genetics (https://genetics.rutgers.edu/people/faculty-list), or MBB (https://mbb.rutgers.edu/people/faculty) undergraduate programs, prior to applying for this fellowship, although previous research experience in the laboratory is not required.  This fellowship application requires that the applicant's DLS Faculty Research Mentor provides a brief letter of support for the applicant. The applicant will need to submit a 1-page research proposal describing the summer project.  Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. For 2023, this fellowship requires in person research and is full time for 10 weeks.  Full time recipients are NOT allowed to register for any summer course credits and are NOT allowed to receive a concurrent fellowship. You must be eligible to work in the U.S. to be awarded this scholarship.

Fellows are required to a create a research poster of their research and present at our  August 9, 2023 poster session. Fellows will also submit a brief 1-2 page summary of their results at the end of the fellowship period and are expected to briefly meet with the donors via a zoom call.

Incomplete applications or applications of ineligible students will not be considered. 

Award notification: Fellows will be notified around May 1, 2023 and acceptance must be acknowledged within 1 week of notification.
