Course Description
This course is designed to give Genetics and Microbiology majors experience in preparing and giving scientific oral presentations. These presentations will provide exposure to current research topics in genetics, especially molecular genetics. Presentations may either be given on topics pertaining to senior research projects or on a current topic provided/approved by the course organizer. An initial faculty presentation will be given to provide an example presentation and to introduce the kinds of topics, resources and depth that will be required.
Course Satisfies Learning Goals
- Integrate the material from multiple courses and research. That is, to think holistically and to see the whole as well as the parts.
- At the end of four years, all our students will be able to design an experiment, carry out the research using the appropriate laboratory techniques and analyze and interpret their data. They will also be able to communicate their discoveries through a written article appropriate for publication in a peer-reviewed Genetics journal, and through talks or posters appropriate for scientific meetings.
Exams, Assignments, and Grading Policy
Grades will be based on the quality of presentations, class participation and regular attendance.
