This course is intended for Life Science majors or those with a strong background in the Biological Sciences.

This course may be used to fulfill the elective requirements of the Biological Sciences major.

Offered:  Fall 2020 (asynchronous): Due to the current CoVID19 crisis and in line with University guidelines, 01:694:301 will be offered remotely for all sections (see below for specifics regarding remote instruction). Given that there is no space limitation due to these guidelines, the enrollment caps for these sections have been lifted.

Plans for remote instruction:

  • Concepts will be covered on a weekly basis.The list of topics and in which weeks they will be covered is listed in the course syllabus.
  • Prior to the dates listed in the syllabus, lecture recordings will be posted on the class Canvas site.
  • During the week in which a topic is covered, aside from the pre-recorded lectures, there will be several opportunities for live meetings with both the Teaching Assistants and/or the course instructor, Dr. Villegas.
  • At the beginning of every week (after lecture recordings have been posted), a short quiz graded for effort and completeness will be given to both assess understanding and to inform which topics need to be covered more extensively during live interaction sessions with the teaching staff.
  • The grades in this class will be made up of:
    • 92%: 4 equally weighted exams administered via lockdown browser
    • 8%: Weekly quizzes to be completed

Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry 01:160:209 or 01:160:307 or higher.  Credit not given for both 01:694:407 and 01:694:301, 11:115:301 or 11:115:403.

Course Description:  This course is a two-semester sequence offered as the primary foundation course for students interested in pursuing modern molecular biology. The first semester (01:694:407) presents a complete survey of Biochemistry topics, and the second semester (01:694:408) provides a thorough coverage of current ideas in Molecular Biology.

  • Carbohydrates, Lipids and Membranes
  • Gycolysis and the Citric Acid Cycle
  • Electron Transport
  • Membrane Transport
  • Photosynthesis and Light Reactions
  • Lipid Metabolism
  • Protein Turnover and Signal Transduction
  • Gluconeogenesis and Glycogen Metabolism
  • Urea Cycle and Pentose Phosphate Pathway
  • Amino Acid and Nucleotide Catabolism and Metabolism

Course satisfies Departmental Learning Goals:  Students should demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge that is needed to begin biomedical research and that is required for post-graduate exams and studies.

 Exams, Assignments, and Grading Policy:   4 hourly exams. The fourth hourly exam is given in the final exam time slot. There will be no cumulative final exam.

The final grade is made up of the average of the hourlies.
