01:146:464 Topics in Cell Biology and Neuroscience: Harnessing Immunity in Cancer and Disease

 

This course is intended for Life Science majors or those with a strong background in the Biological Sciences.

This course may be used to fulfill the elective requirements of the Biological Sciences major.

Class meets  twice per week in ARC Room 110 on Tuesday and Thursdays, 5 pm- 6:20 pm

Course Description

The course will be taught by two-three faculty members, each responsible for teaching a module on a topic of choice. Each module consists of a mixture of lectures by the teaching faculty and student presentation/discussion of assigned primary research articles. Each student will also be required to write a final written paper consisting of a brief critical review of the assigned research paper. Topics will include cancer immunology and autoimmunity and the role of specific immune subsets in these processes.

1. Master factual and conceptual knowledge in cell biology and neuroscience that will provide a solid foundation for success in advanced training and professional careers.

2. Develop an ability to summarize, integrate and organize information.

3. Use scientific reasoning to evaluate the potential for current research and new discoveries to improve our understanding of cell biology and neuroscience and its relevance to human health and to our society.  

Grading Policy

The final grade in this course will be based upon student presentation (50%), class participation (20%), and a written paper (30% of the grade).
